VPN apps are quite useful for encrypting your web traffic or hiding your identity online, but research has found that over 38% of Android VPN apps contain malware that tracks users. The research group studied 234 VPN apps on the Google Play Store, the results?
18% do not encrypt traffic
84% leak user data
38% reveal malware or malvertising
80% request access to sensitive data like user accounts or text messages
What is worrisome is that most of these apps are highly rated and FREE
The researchers also compiled a list of the top 10 ones you should avoid. (FYI: Google has taken down some these apps).
OkVpn (4.2 rating)
EasyVpn
SuperVPN
Betternet (4.3 rating; 5 million downloads)
CrossVpn
Archie VPN
HatVPN
sFly Network Booster
One Click VPN (4.3 rating; 1 million downloads)
Fast Secure Payment
I’d personally recommend TunnelBear (Since it isn’t 100% free and has been available for a while one), Opera’s VPN is also worth a try.
